Police Ombudsman's retirement: Chief Executive confirms services continue uninterrupted

Published Date: 2 January 2026

The Chief Executive of the Police Ombudsman’s Office has confirmed that services will continue uninterrupted and that measures are in place to ensure stability and consistency following the retirement of Mrs Marie Anderson on 31 December 2025.

Although recruitment for a new Ombudsman has begun, there will be a gap between Mrs Anderson’s retirement and the appointment of her successor.

Chief Executive, Hugh Hume, has written to key partners and stakeholders in recent days to advise them that interim arrangements have been put in place and that the Office remains committed to maintaining its statutory responsibilities and delivering independent, impartial investigations.
